The Housing Shortage
Thrive Economic Development, in partnership with Jefferson County and the Greater Watertown Community Health Foundation, is hosting a housing summit to address the unmet need for additional diverse housing options in our communities.
Business is booming in Greater Jefferson County. Recent headlines have touted the addition of hundreds of jobs and the expansion of key infrastructure. Unemployment levels are at historic lows. Good things are happening here.
Yet even as our economy is thriving, Greater Jefferson County has struggled to meet the demand for workforce housing. More than half of workers in jobs located in Jefferson County commute from outside the county each day.
The problem is not a new one. Even before recent business expansions, Jefferson County was facing a shortfall of more than 2,400 housing units. Our stand is simple: If you work in Greater Jefferson County, you should be able to live here too.
